Om, written as ॐ , is a cosmic sound, rich in meaning, represents the formless aspect of God, pervading all of creation – as per the Hindu Vedic scriptures.
This sacred syllable – when chanted, has the potential to release latent energy from the deepest levels of our body. Such cleansing results in experiencing enormous peace and stability which is beyond words.
What is the right way to chant?
ॐ actually consists of three syllables: A, U, M. The first sound “A” (pronounced as “aaa” stretched) is from the belly, with an open throat and mouth. This is then merged into the chanting of the sound “U” (prolonged “ooo”) that is created from the middle of the mouth. The sequence ends with chanting “M” (prolonged “mmmm”) with the mouth closed.
Effects of chanting :
ॐ is a subject of meditation. When chanted – the universal hymn vibrates at the frequency of 432 Hz, which is the same vibrational frequency found throughout everything in nature. Hence chanting ॐ symbolically and physically tunes us into our connection to all other living beings, nature and the universe. This sense of oneness helps calm the mind, soothes the nervous system, regulates blood flow into various body parts. Symptoms of hypertension are significantly reduced and these cardiovascular benefits thus helps improving the health of the heart. All this kicks into building a self-healing power resulting in stronger immunity.
The ॐ chanting produces a vibration and sound which is felt through your vocal cords and sinuses. The vibrations open up the sinuses to clear the airways. Rectifying the breathing at a cellular level, bringing about hormonal balance and thus chanting is a great catalyst in making us feel rejuvenated and control our emotions and moods. Release of stress helps us detoxify mentally as well as physically. Thus the body’s energy and vitality are augmented by regular chanting.
The human mind is constantly fluctuating in thoughts. Finding focus is often difficult for us. Continuous chanting of ॐ is a mechanism for building concentration and tuning into various levels of intelligence or consciousness. Such a stable mind and body allows you to see situations with a clear and rational mind.

How to build a daily practice?
Beginning and ending your yoga practice by chanting ॐ for a few minutes helps connects us to our practice in a deeper way than just with physical postures.
Assuming chanting to fix your problems overnight will be a short sight. The benefits of chanting cannot be established through reasoning and intellect. It can only be experienced through faith and constant repetition of the Mantra. However, many of us who have persistently pursued chanting, have also acknowledged that it is nature of the mind to seek variety. Mantras are many but singing them with complete involvement of the mind is what will lend the highest benefit.
